Things You should Consider while Crate Training Your Pet

Friday, March 1, 2013

A crate is used as a short term device, to aid in the training and management of your pet. If the dog gets used to being in the crate, it will help in giving the dog a safe and comfortable living space to sleep at night. A crate is also helpful when you want to travel with your dog, while you visit relatives or go on a tour. Crates serve as an excellent tool to welcome the dog into the house.

The Principle behind Crating

Dog is basically a den animal that will instinctively feel at home in an enclosed space like a den, where he can sleep, be safe from danger and also raise a family. The crate therefore serves as a safe refuge for the dog. Crates serve as excellent house training equipment. Being in a crate restricts the dog from access into the house, where it can cause havoc to the furniture inside the house.

Precautions to be Followed

There are certain precautions you need to follow while using the crate

  • It should never be used as a punishing tool. This will instill fear in the dog and it will refuse to come near the crate.
  • Never keep the dog in the crate for long periods of time. It can cause depression and stress. So make sure the dog is well looked after by a dog sitter or a day care centre.
  • Puppies that are less than six months old should not be kept for more than a four hour stretch, as they will not be potty trained and mess up the crate.
  • The crate training should be done till he learns to behave well inside the house. After that he will get used to it and feel at home in the crate.

Controlling the Natural Urges

With a crate you can know when the dog wants to eliminate, and also have control on the place he will eliminate. When kept all night in a crate, the dog will eliminate, as soon as it is released from the crate and taken outside. This will help in avoiding the soiling of the house, and you can also encourage the pet by giving it treats.

Crate Selection

There are many types of crates ranging from plastic and synthetic models to fabric or metal pens that are collapsible. The sizes also vary, and you can choose one from the catalogue present in the pet stores. The crate should be large enough, so that the pet can stand and turn around in the space. If you have a puppy, choose a bigger size as the crate needs to house the adult size too. You can block the excess space or try renting the crate, so you can change the crate once the puppy grows in size.

Difficulties with a Crate

When your pet whines at night inside the crate you will not know whether he feels depressed or whether he wants to eliminate. Using the crate as a solution to prevent him from wreaking havoc inside the house is not good. This behavior needs counter conditioning and other desensitization methods that can be done only by getting professional help.

The benefits of crate training which your dog undergoes are clearly reflected in the characters he shows at the completion of the same. You not only succeed in infusing desirable behaviors in him but also the grooming phase becomes very easier. It is like he returns the same type of concern in the form of devotion and affection to you.
