The Lowdown on Pet Fleas & Natural Solutions to Treat Them

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Fleas are a pain but when it comes to pets they are sometimes inevitable! The problem is that fleas are uncomfortable for both you and your pet, so they are something you’ll want to deal with as quickly as possible. Thankfully, there are ways you can try to avoid them, and even if you can’t there are ways you can treat them and eradicate the problem.

Avoidance

Fleas generally go for animals that are run down or unhealthy. If you want to avoid fleas then one of the best things you can do is make sure that your pet is well fed with a healthy and well rounded diet. Try and make sure it is kept at a healthy weight and make sure it gets regular exercise. Whilst this wont completely stop the flea problem, it is one of the best ways to avoid an attack of fleas!

Equipment

It might sound strange but when it comes to pet flea treatment you also need to make sure you get the right equipment. There are a few bits and pieces you can get hold of, but a flea comb is priceless! You can get hold of a flea comb for just a few pounds, but they are great at removing fleas from your pet.

You should comb your pet daily and put whatever comes off into a bowl of water and then flush it down the toilet. It is also worth putting whatever you take off of the pet onto a light coloured towel, just so you can keep an eye on things and see if there are fleas on your pet.

Bathing

Flea shampoo is another must have product. You should wash your pet a couple of times a year with flea shampoo just to try and avoid them getting fleas. If they do become a problem, then try increasing the amount of times you bath your dog to help kill off the fleas and eradicate the problem.

The Rest Of The House

It is easy to assume that as your pet has fleas, it is only your pet that needs treating however this is not the case. Whilst you should treat your pet, you should also think about the rest of your home. Make sure you vacuum everywhere possible. You should also wash your pets bed and pay careful attention to anywhere else that your pet sleeps or lies.

Products

There are different products you can get which will help with fleas including:

     Diatomaceous earth (DE).
     Cedar oil.
     Sodium polyborate powder.
     Mosquito Barrier.
     Nematodes.

The best thing to remember is to treat fleas as quickly as possible. They’re a big pain but if left they can become a much bigger problem. Sore and broken skin is horrible for your pet to live with and can easily become infected. Treating fleas is easy, as you can see above so there is no reason to let your pet suffer! Get your hands on products today and start your fight against fleas straight away.
