Pet Cemeteries: Creepy Horror Story Set Or Dignified Resting Place For Man's Best Friend?

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

Man has a long history of burying dead animals. The ancient Egyptians often mummified their animals with their human masters. Cats in particular were considered very special creatures and therefore deserving of an honourable burial. Over the centuries, pet cemeteries have provided a place for grieving owners to give their loyal pets a final resting place. So is the tradition of animal burial a charming one or is it just plain creepy?

Parisian Pet Cemetery

There are several famous pet cemeteries around the world. The 'Le Cimetiere des Chiens et Autres Animaux Domestiques’, which translates as Cemetery of Dogs and Other Domestic Animals, was founded in Paris, France, in 1899. Previously, Parisians either opted for an impromptu burial somewhere in the city, or threw their dead pets into the River Seine or the refuse.

Rabbits, Racehorses and Rin Tin Tin

The Parisian pet cemetery proved to be a popular place for Parisians to take their deceased animals. It contains mostly cats and dogs, but there are also a number of unexpected animals to be found, including a racehorse, a lion and a monkey. If you ever have the opportunity to visit the cemetery, look out for the grave of Rin Tin Tin, Hollywood’s most famous canine star.

New York Pet Cemetery

The Hartsdale Pet Cemetery in New York is the most famous pet burial ground in the US. The cemetery dates back to 1896 and remains as popular today as it was a century ago. There are more than 70,000 animal graves in the cemetery, and if you live in the area it is a lovely peaceful place to have as a final resting place for a beloved pet.

Hyde Park Pet Cemetery

The unofficial pet cemetery at Victoria Gate in Hyde Park, London, welcomed its first burial in 1880. A much-loved dog called Prince, who happened to belong to the wife of Prince George, the Duke of Cambridge, was buried in the grounds of the gate keeper, a Mr Windbridge. Burying a favourite pet was previously unheard of in society circles, but the idea soon caught on and before long the aristocracy were queuing up to bury their pets in the same plot of land. The last burial there was a regimental ‘mascot’ dog, once again called Prince, who was given a special burial plot in the Hyde Park pet cemetery in 1967.

Ancient Pet Cemetery

Although pet cemeteries are a relatively recent phenomenon, a strange discovery was made in the Ashkelon National Park in Israel. During archaeological excavation of the site, a dog cemetery was discovered. The remains of over 700 dogs have been found so far, although there is likely to be many more canine graves that have yet to be uncovered.

Many pet owners choose to bury their beloved pets in the backyard, but if you are concerned that you may move on one day, it is a far better idea to place your pet’s remains in a special pet cemetery. And if you can’t bear the thought of being separated from your best friend in death as well as in life, there are some pet cemeteries that allow the cremated remains of humans to be buried there, too.
