Choosing The Ideal Name For Your Dog

One of the fun parts of getting a pet is choosing what to call him or her – although there are potential pitfalls to avoid.

As you prepare to welcome a dog into your home, there will be all sorts of issues to deal with – from browsing through the different types of dog beds and bedding, to pondering when you will take your new canine chum for a walk. A name feels like the kind of thing that would be hard to mess up, but don’t be fooled – it is possible.

Of course, the name that you give your dog is completely your decision and should be something that is personal to you; however, by checking through the following three points you can avoid making a poor choice that you will later regret…

Shout the name – It may sound odd, but try shouting the name in question; you will probably spend a significant amount of time calling for your dog when out and about, so if you feel stupid shouting the name then it is not ideal. Another problem can be that the name is too long and does not shorten easily.

Funny names - While a name may sound funny when you first think of it, some humour has a fairly short lifespan, so make sure you do not pick a moniker on a whim without thinking ‘will this still be funny in ten years time?’ and ‘do I really want my pet’s name to be necessarily funny?’

Suitability - Arguably the most important aspect of a dog’s name, yet at the same time the most subjective is if the moniker suits them. You may have always wanted a spaniel called Spanner, but if you go to adopt a puppy and it doesn’t suit that name then do not be stubborn. Obviously, it is an art – not a science – so suitability is in the eye of the person giving the name.
