Overlooked Benefits of Owning a Dog
Tuesday, December 13, 2011
If you own a dog, you already know just how these furry creatures can enrich the lives of their family members. When you become a 2-legged pack leader, your pooch’s tail wags add to your happiness in ways that only fellow pack leaders can understand. And believe it or not, our dogs are good for our hearts both emotionally and physically.
Dog’s Are Good For Our Health
Dog owners tend to stay active since the very nature of a dog demands some exercise. Throwing the ball, running through the park, even doga (doggie yoga) are all ways that our pup’s get us off the couch and keep us moving!
As a result of being more active, your dog is benefiting your health and your waistline. Want a successful diet? Need a workout partner? He may not be allowed at the local gym, but your mutt is likely more than willing to help you walk or run off a few pounds. It will be healthy fun for the both of you.
Dog’s ward off bad moods and even depression; they melt away our stress with a nudge of there nose and they fight our high cholesterol levels. Several studies have shown how heart attack survivors live longer when they own a pet. And if you have an infant at home, you’ll be glad to learn that having a dog at home means less risk of allergies and asthma.
Dogs Bring the Family Together
We assign chores to teach our children responsibility, but even a very small child can help fill a water bowl or brush a dog’s coat. These “chores” are also often the fun ones. Who wouldn’t rather pet the dog than load the dishwasher?
The impact of the family pet is perhaps felt strongest by our children. Children love to play and a dog is all too ready to participate. Without the invisible fence, I think our dog would follow the kid’s school bus each morning.
The love and relationship that develops between a child and dog can even mirror that of a sibling. Children will talk to and share their emotions with their pet. They disclose their secrets to the family dog. And since dog’s are much better at reading emotional and physical cues than your kiddo’s goldfish or hamster, he can react correctly to your child’s body language and tone.
Dog’s Make Us Look Good!
If if your social skills are lacking, your pup is a born social networking animal. Your are a million times more approachable when you bring Fido along. In fact, don’t be offended if your dog is greeted before you are by most strangers.
Dogs are great match makers. Take a walk and see if those tail wags don’t lead to shacking hands or even arranging coffee dates at the local dog friendly diner.
Dogs - Our Furry Friends
We all know that a dog is man’s best friend, so how is this an overlooked benefit? Well, it is usually an under-appreciated benefit.
Your pup will always be happy to see you, eager to spend time with you, “all ears” when you’re talking and ready to cuddle when you need it. Perhaps there is no better benefit to doggie ownership that to know you always have the love and loyalty of a best friend.
