Overcoming dog anxiety

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

As a nation of dog lovers, discovering that your pooch is a little under the weather can be really upsetting. Usually playful, happy dogs can sometimes become withdrawn and disinterested, lose their appetite or shed more hair than normal. You're sure it's nothing physical, but what is wrong with your beloved pet?

Believe it or not, dogs can suffer from depression or anxiety. Moving house, seasonal changes or interruptions to routines can all contribute towards your dogs well being. It can take a while for a pooch to adjust, but the good news is that these conditions are typically short-lived and there are steps an owner can take to improve the situation.

Are you leaving your dog alone more than usual suddenly? Has a change in employment meant you're having to leave your dog behind all day? Are they being left in a new, unfamiliar, house? If so, why not enrol your pet in dog day care?

No dog owners likes to leave their pet alone, but sometimes it cannot be avoided and can cause separation anxiety. However, attending dog day care will mean that your dog can socialise with other dogs, get exercise, play; ultimately they won't be lonely. Additionally, you won't feel so guilty (because we know you do) about leaving your dog. You can't lose.

For an anxious pup, consider buying a cage for them to sleep in. Contrary to the belief that this is a cruel practice, the cage actually provides security for the dog, indicating that they have their own space in the house.

If depression might be attributed to the loss of a canine or human companion, give your dog lots of extra love and attention. Visit parks or arrange walks with other dog owners. Being with other dogs and people can help. Maybe even consider getting another dog?

Of course, if your dog really isn't him or herself, then visit the vet for a proper check up and diagnosis, just to be on the safe side.

Providing love, attention and a safe home are certainly the first steps to helping your dog recover.
