How to Care for New Puppy

Sunday, June 12, 2011

Having pets at home adds an extra excitement in the household and they become one of the members of the family and puppies definitely bring a new kind of joy to the household and brining one up is really an exciting experience. It is quite difficult but when done with interest and care, there can be nothing more enthralling. Dogs are creatures that require extra care and attention from humans. Here are a few tips that can help you take care of your puppies effectively.

  • The first thing you need to concentrate upon is a proper place for the puppy that is comfortable for the puppy. Following this, you will have to gather the things that are required for the puppy. You can also use a large spacious wooden box to accommodate the puppy comfortably.
  • Get two metal bowls, as they remain cleaner as compared to the glass bowls. Some other items that help the puppy stay happy and excited are a bed for the puppy, with soft pillows, soft toys around, etc.
  • Have the puppies vaccinated against rabies and this is best done when it is six or seven weeks old. They are puppy injections for roundworms, hookworms and heartworms. The possibility for other parasites is also checked by the veterinarian.
  • When it comes to the feeding part, the puppies must be fed every two hours. If you have the mother of the puppy, create a larger and comfy space for it to feed the puppy, else you need to take care that the puppy is fed every two to three hours.
  • Teaching the puppy good behavior is also a major part of caring for the puppies. You need to find time to reinforce good behavior like being obedient, not barking inside the house, etc.
  • Another one of the important puppy care tips is that you must ensure you do not over feed the dog. This may cause serious health implications.
  • Take your puppy for a walk everyday and give it the fresh feel of the outside air. Taking it twice a day for walking is better.
  • Brush the coat of the puppy, clean the ears and have your puppy well groomed so that it looks healthy too.
  • Take your pet for regular checkups to ensure the health of the puppy. Also keep a check on how the puppy is faring. Once you find your pet suffering from illness, call for a vet immediately.
